Who Can Apply?

Students are eligible to apply for admission to the LIVE if they have completed the equivalent of an EU secondary school education (approximately 12 years of formal education starting at age six) and a bachelor's degree (approximately 3 years in high educational institution). Applicants must have either an appropriate diploma or leaving certificates for their secondary school and bachelor's degree. EU students must have obtained at least 180 ECTS. The Master LIVE is a programme of excellence in learning and research, looking for Biochemists, Bioengineers, Biologists, Clinicians, Pharmacists and Veterinarians.

• Academic records

Along with application, applicant must submit official academic records of the last three years of study, plus a copy of any terminating or qualifying examination results or certificates.

All documents written in a language other than English must be accompanied by an English translation that is notarized. Please note that both documents are required: the copy in original language and the notarized English translation. Applicants must submit all of the following credentials to the secretariat of the master. Applicant's teachers and guidance counsellors can do this electronically or by mailing them to the secretariat.

• Documentation of financial support

75% of the LIVE students are fellows with their merit scholarships covered by EU grants and 25% of the LIVE students or their family or sponsors must assume all responsibility for student expenses.

To train a group of 24 LIVE selected students, the first 20 ranked students will be funded by EU. Then, the 4 next selected students must be high ranked and self-funded to be allowed in LIVE programme. Applicants have to tick the fields “fellow” or “self-funded student”. In the case applicant has selected “self-funded students” and is in the first 20 ranked students, (s)he will be funded by EU scholarship. 

If applicant has selected "self-funded student", since (s)he and his/her family or sponsors must assume all responsibility for student expenses, applicant should review the estimates in the Confidential Statement for Financing Studies before deciding to apply to the LIVE. 

To complete application and receive the necessary documentation for obtaining a visa, self-funded students must submit both of the following by April:

• The completed Confidential Statement for Financing Studies form
• Documents confirming available funds for the annual costs of study. All documented sources of support must be addressed to the secretariat of the master, written in English and documented in Euros, signed and stamped by a bank official.

Self-funded students who are academically admissible to the LIVE will receive conditional admission until we receive official financial documentation. We encourage students to submit this documentation with their application in the supplementary document section. They will be needed for: 1) getting a student visa from the EU Consulates, 2) EU Customs and Border Protection upon entry to the EU, or 3) transfer from another EU high school.

• Passport Requirements

All international students must supply a photocopy of the photo/data page of their current, valid passport. This can be uploaded via MyLIVE Application.

English is the language of instruction of the LIVE. Students must be able to understand rapid, idiomatic English and express themselves clearly in speech and writing. If their first language or the primary language spoken at home is not English, applicant must take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic test).

We can accept a certificate of studies performed in English, established by the university that has delivered the related diploma or other English test than IELTS/TOEFL, provided that we can get equivalence information, for example at the website: Language Comparison Test .

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Total 84 based on # Reading: 21; Listening: 18; Speaking: 23; Writing: 22; Paper-based or TEFL ITP exam: 550 or above. 

Applicant must indicate on the TOEFL registration form that (s)he wants his/her test results sent directly to the University of Claude Bernard Lyon 1. The TOEFL code for the University of Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is 0463. For information about the TOEFL, contact the TOEFL website.

• International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

In lieu of the TOEFL exam, applicant may submit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). A mean score of 6.5 or higher will also satisfy English Language proficiency requirement for LIVE programmes, each section (writing, speaking, reading, listening) being above 5.5. • Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) 

 The relationship of IELTS / TOEFL with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) is complex as IELTS/TOEFL are rather designed to span a much broader proficiency continuum. In the CEFR, the required level is C1.

Applicants should be aware that joining LIVE is an extremely competitive process, which takes time. Only the best 25 applicants will be selected per intake. The ranking outcome will determine the award of Erasmus+ JMD scholarships and Consortium scholarships to the best applicants.
